The Traditional Settlement of Volissos
Volissos is situated in the north-western part of the island and is 25,48 miles away from the town of Chios. It is the capital of the Municipality of Amanis which comprises the 17 settlements developing in the mountainous regions of Amanis and the foots of Mount Pelinaion. The Settlement of Volissos is located in the greater region virtually since the 10th century B.C. Today it vividly maintains its traditional architecture as well as a series of typical traditional customs and productive processes.

The tour lasts well over an hour and the Acoustic Guide devices are readily available at the Giaouzaki restaurant, on the square of the settlement.

“Until around the beginning of last century, this was one of the points from where the town crier, an individual blessed with a loud voice, would inform the village of the events of the time and official pronouncements”.

“What is certain, however, is that the castle was the center of protection and control for the area, due to its obvious strategic position. It was part of the wider defense system of castles, towers and watchtowers, which was fully developed during Genoan rule in the 14th century.
