The Monastery of “Nea Moni” of Chios is located in the central area of the island,
12 kilometers away from the town of Chios. Nea Moni stands out as one of the most important Monuments of Greece, being before everything else, a Monument of the World Heritage List of UNESCO.
The foundation of Nea Moni in 1042 AD signaled the Byzantine Empire, as one its uppermost moments.
Nea Moni introduced the “Simple or Insular Octagonal Type”, by being the first and most characteristic sample of an architectural style, used thereafter in the orthodox ecclesiastical architecture.
The illumination of the Main Church of the Monastery is unique; mosaics of fine art and frescoes infuse the Monument with an especial cultural and artistic aura.
The one-thousand-year-old course of Nea Moni is effectively and closely connected to the history of Chios.
Inside the Monastery you can find a small ecclesiastical museum.
The Audio Guided Tour lasts 60 minutes. The Audio Guide devices are available at the Waiting Hall, on the Port of Chios.0
